WHAT DO I PREPARE FOR NEXT STEPS?

PERFORMERS – AUDITION VIDEO RULES & RECOMMENDATIONS

    • All performers are encouraged to upload an unedited video that consists of two contrasting monologues (no more than 3 minutes total).  If a performer has a problem uploading such a big video, two separate files is acceptable. If the performer is also a singer, an additional 30 seconds is allotted for a 16 bar cut of a musical selection.
    • Here are some tips on how to create the strongest video for your Next Steps audition:
      • Introduce yourself and your material; the title of the play your monologues are from;
      • Do not include the name of your school in your introduction;
      • Please utilize a stationary camera when filming your piece, just as you would for a traditional audition submission. This means
      • no fancy camera work, video effects, or editing. Selectors will be considering to your performance, not your camera work.
      • Consider framing. How is best to frame your piece? i.e. Headshot, waist-up, full-body. This is your choice, based off the needs of your performance. Again, no camera moves; your pieces should be filmed from a fixed position with no pans, tilts, movements, or zooming.
      • Lighting should be general without lighting changes. Natural light is often favorable, and utilizing back or side light to fill may help with clarity or visibility (key light should light your face).
      • It is recommended that you limit prop usage and use generic furniture. Remember that this is an audition, not a play performance, so technical choices will be disregarded.
      • It is recommended that you place your camera at eye-level of the performer.
      • If singing, it is recommended, but not required, that you utilize piano accompaniment for your audition. This may mean singing along to a pre-recorded track or it may mean singing with a live accompanist. A cappella submissions will also be accepted.
      • Files must be uploaded as an .mp4, .mov, or .avi. (and be no larger than

DESIGNERS/TECHNICIANS/MANAGERS – SUBMISSION RULES AND RECOMMENDATIONS

We have several companies and schools looking for designers, technicians, and stage managers. Traditionally, one would submit a portfolio (or promptbook) of their work with a resume of their experience. However, this year we also have companies that are non-traditional candidates (playwrights, arts leaders, collaborators, etc.) and students should consider creating a website that showcases those talents as well. All work will be submitted via a AIRTABLE (or link to a student-created website).

    • KCACTF2 recommends using an easy and free website builder such as Google Sites to create a simple website that can display and contain materials necessary to exhibit the design or technology work.
    • Costume Designers may include examples of some process work such as preliminary sketches, or paperwork along with sketches (swatches) and realized work should include production photo(s).
    • Scene Designers may include examples of some process work such as preliminary sketches, ground plans, or final renderings and/or models. Realized work should include production photo(s).
    • Lighting Designers may include a plot, associated paperwork and the process you used to arrive at your design choices. Realized work should include production photo(s).
    • Sound Designers may include clearly identifiable links or digital files with selected cues plus organizational/paper work such as sound plot and sound system design. Please include your process for arriving at your design choices. Realized work should include production photo(s).
    • Stage Managers may include work that gives a thorough presentation of the scope and complexity of the project they stage-managed.
    • If showing a call script and/or blocking notation, please include 3-4 pages as a single PDF. Choose pages that show off your strongest work.
    • Companies and Schools are asked to consider the submitted materials, NOT your website design skills. Clearer simpler website options are preferred.

WEBSITE SUBMISSIONS DUE BY JANUARY 4TH

    ACTOR AUDITION and PRODUCTION INTERVIEWS

Next Steps invites theatre companies and graduate schools to hold auditions and interviews at every KCACTF festival.

ACTORS STUDIO DRAMA SCHOOL AT PACE UNIVERSITY

MFA IN ACTING, DIRECTING, AND PLAYWRITING

    Audtioning

Any graduating senior who is interested in doing a NY based MFA program

Guided by the methodology that has its roots in the “system” set forth by Constantin Stanislavski in his three groundbreaking books, An Actor Prepares, Building a Character and Creating a Role, the Actors Studio Drama School involves three years of intensive study in the dramatic arts.

Continuously evolving, the “system” informs the curriculum of this unique dramatic arts degree program. Whether an aspiring actor, director or playwright, you will begin your three-year exploration by studying the actor’s craft and developing a shared language. In the first year you will be consumed with learning the methodology and language, as well as training in your craft. In the second year, you and your fellow MFA candidates will immerse yourselves in unique and specialized training. Working together as an ensemble—actors, directors and playwrights—in your third year, you will apply your knowledge and skills in a Repertory Season.

    Year 1

In the first year classes, the students encounter a unique feature of the program: they are setting out on a side-by-side journey―as actors, directors and playwrights together―learning the common language that will enable them to collaborate productively, harmoniously and seamlessly. The ensemble nature of the Actors Studio process will emerge, and, more important, the teachers and students will begin to know each other.

    Year 2

Students move now from the preparation of their instrument (themselves) to the preparation of the role. Now a mysterious stranger enters the student's life―a “character,” with his or her own needs and desires and life, and way of proceeding through it. Creating that character is the task of the second year. Stanislavski deliberately chose a verb more readily associated with the artisan than the artist. “Building a Character,” with its sense of bricks and mortar and its clear implication of methodical, craftsman-like construction is the mandate of the Second Year.

    Year 3

The focus of this year is the formation of all the students into a repertory group. While they continue their common and specialized courses, the students develop and collaborate on the dramatic material, which will be presented in their Third-Year Repertory Season, a weekly series of scenes, one-act plays and, if possible, full-length plays, some of them written by our playwrights, and all of them directed by our directors and acted by our actors.

    OHIO UNIVERSITY
    MFA IN THEATRE

    Auditioning

Any graduating senior, or juniors, who are interested in advanced studies in design.

The Production Design program prepares students for careers as designers in all aspects of the professional theater. Our training provides a strong foundation in design and the skills to compete in the professional market.

Design areas include scenic, costume, lighting and sound design. The program is structured to allow specialization and to encourage dual area interests. With a graduate population of 25-30 design and technology students, classes tend to be small and intense, so students get a lot of individual attention and mentoring.

Each semester ends with a review by all of the faculty of recent student work. Over the course of the three years, emphasis is placed on professional portfolio development which synthesizes classes, production and resume building employment. Classes in Performance Photography and Portfolio support this emphasis. Summer work in the field is required, as is yearly national conference attendance.

    Year 1

The initial year includes fundamentals in design, the director-designer collaboration, and developing skills in drawing, painting and/or digital drafting and paperwork. Realized production assignments generally begin with an assistantship and follow with a design assignment in the second semester.

    Year 2

The second year is focused on synthesis of skills and practical experiences. Students take advanced courses in design as well as the business of design, theater history and criticism and electives to complete the first two years. Realized production will continue with at least one assignment per semester as well as production work related to practicum credits or graduate stipends.

    Year 3

Students design a fully supported main stage thesis project and intern at substantial professional theater or an equivalent producing organization. The final requirement is the presentation of a digital and traditional "exit portfolio" and website that meet prevailing professional standards. Graduates should be able to pass the portfolio review portion of the United Scenic Artists Union exam or gain entry into a significant regional or Broadway design studio.

I think this fills in all of the gaps, but will double check.

    OUR PROGRAM

Villanova’s Master’s and Certificate Programs in Theatre offer a distinct fusion of both academic work and practical experience.  Our flexible, multi-faceted degree program prepares students from a variety of disciplines to succeed on stage, behind-the-scenes and in the classroom. The comprehensive 36-credit MA can be completed in two years as a full-time student or at your own pace as a part-time student. Funding opportunities are available in the areas of Acting, Research, Public Relations, Costumes, Set Construction and Properties Construction.

    • Learn from award-winning theatre artists as you participate in our professionally directed and designed mainstage season.
    • Choose from a variety of electives including acting, directing, design, playwriting, solo performance and theatre management.
    • Collaborate with your peers on student-produced work ranging from new play development to fully-realized productions.
    • Pursue your passion as you design a unique course of study that culminates in a thesis project in the area of your choosing.

    OUR MISSION

The Villanova University Theatre Department aims to inform and inspire theatre artists, administrators, and scholars who will impact the future of this dynamic art form.  Our culture of creativity engages in rigorous study and the practical application of theatrical theories and techniques.  We believe art has the power to transform hearts and minds by challenging both individuals and communities.

    OUR PRODUCTIONS

Villanova Theatre is committed to training theatre practitioners through the production of professional theatre. Our four-show seasons provide exciting opportunities to work on many aspects of our productions — from acting to design, stage management to dramaturgy. Villanova’s new John and Joan Mullen Center for the Performing Arts, featuring three state-of-the-art performance spaces, is located just a few miles outside of Philadelphia, allowing students the chance to work with professionals in the Philadelphia area both during their time in the graduate program and after graduation. Many of our students intern and work in professional theatres through connections made while working on a Villanova Theatre production. Productions are directed and designed by faculty and freelance theatre artists. Graduate students are the mainstay of the season, with opportunities to be involved as actors, stage managers and production crew. Villanova Theatre productions are attended by a large subscriber base and reviewed by media outlets from the greater Philadelphia area. Since 1995, we have received 52 nominations and six Barrymore Awards for Excellence in Theatre.

OUR COMMITMENT TO DIVERSITY, EQUITY & INCLUSION

The Villanova Theatre Department is committed to creating a culture of inclusion that is driven by a curiosity about different perspectives and respect for the variety of human experiences. This culture is fostered both mindfully and deliberately through seeking an ardently receptive, engaged, and accessible learning environment for all.
