Directing Shadow Program for New Plays

Directing Shadow Program for New Plays

This new project invites young and/or developing directors to serve as an assistant to the director for one of the ten minute plays that will be auditioned, cast, and rehearsed for a concert reading presentation at the festival.  If you apply for this program and are selected, you will join your “lead” director at auditions where you will observe the process.  You will also be called upon to help with logistics, for a portion of the day-long auditions.  You will then “shadow” the director of the new piece through the rehearsal process in the succeeding days.   Plan to keep a journal on what you see developing.  You will be present at the staged readings of the ten minute plays.  The accomplished directors of these new pieces will be asked in advance if they would be willing to take on an assistant to the director.  If so, you will be a “gopher” for that director.  In return you will receive from the experienced director explanations and discussions of choices being made.  Learning through watching and listening is an excellent way to start on this complex process.

Please fill out the application [Director shadow program application].  If you are applying for more than one aspect of directing at the festival, please be sure to indicate your order of preference for the three directing opportunities available at the festival through the Student Directing Institute.
