CONGRATULATIONS to our Festival 55 Invited Productions!
Slippery Rock University Presents:
Kate Hamill’s Pride & Prejudice
Directed by Laura Smiley
This isn’t your Grandma’s Austen! Lil Nas & Kendrick Lamar bookend this raucous, bold, ironic & timely Re-telling of Pride & Prejudice. Originally titled First Impressions, watch this journey unfold the thrills & absurdities of finding the perfect…er…perfectly imperfect match while owning up to the fact that maybe biases can cloud one’s judgement.
Eastern Mennonite University Presents:
The Crucible
by Arthur Miller
Directed by Justin Poole
Featuring Music by Perry Blosser and Joseph Harder
Arthur Miller’s timely, Pulitzer Prize winning play comes to life with immersive staging and atmospheric lighting and music. Be prepared for a theatrical experience that shocks, surprises, and highlights this classic play’s eerie contemporary relevance.
West Chester University Presents:
Spring Awakening
music by Duncan Sheik and a book and lyrics by Steven Sater
Directed by Charles DelMarcelle
The winner of eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Spring Awakening follows a group of teenage German students as they struggle to understand and obtain agency over their own bodies inside of a repressive, dismissive, ill-informed, and often cruel society. The folk-rock score by Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater is equal parts powerful and poetic, acting as a raw reflection of the characters’ inner lives, and a powerful celebration of youth and rebellion. Content transparency: nudity, rape, death by suicide, and violence.
West Liberty University Presents:
Peter and the Starcatcher
By Rick Elice
Directed by Michael Aulick
Peter and the Starcatcher is a wildly theatrical production about a young orphan and his friends who are sent to a distant island where they are to be fed to the evil King Zarboff’s pet snake. They know nothing of the mysterious trunk in the captain’s cabin, which contains a precious, otherworldly cargo. At sea, the boys are discovered by a precocious young girl named Molly, a Starcatcher-in-training who realizes that the trunk’s precious cargo is starstuff, a celestial substance so powerful that it must never fall into the wrong hands. When the ship is taken over by pirates – led by the fearsome Black Stache, a villain determined to claim the trunk and its treasure for his own – the journey quickly becomes a thrilling adventure.
The play features a dozen actors portraying more than 100 unforgettable characters, Peter and the Starcatcher uses stagecraft and the limitless possibilities of imagination to bring the story to life: “To have faith is to have wings!!”
Salisbury University Presents:
Mud
by María Irene Fornés
directed by Matt Saltzberg
This play in 17 scenes is set in a spare, bone-white wooden room perched on a red-earth promontory. Living with the churlish Lloyd, Mae seeks to escape her bleak, poverty-stricken existence by learning to read. She befriends Henry, who offers to teach her, but brutality and depravity nevertheless ensue.
